Navigation Notes: There are two segments of the route that may need some explanation. First, The route no longer goes up Sunrise Highway, over Mt Laguna. The snow level will be at 5000ft, and Laguna is at over 6000ft, which will make that climb impassable on a bike. Instead, riders will ride the course to Pine Valley, then turn around and go back through Guatay to Hwy 79, and then ride on Hwy 79 to Julian, where the course will continue. Second, at mile 215.8, riders turn left on Carmel Valley Road, from Camino Del Mar. After you pass under I-5, there is a Shell Station on the left side of the road. Turn into the Shell Station for the Control. After you leave, continue on Carmel Valley Road and turn right on El Camino Real. After you turn, look off to your right for the entrance to a bike path. You'll use this path for the next several miles. Here is a link that shows this section of the route. The next section is on the same bike path. The bike path will appear to come to an end at Carmel Country Road. You'll need to exit the bike path at Carmel Country Road via the pedestrian crossing, turn left on Carmel Country Road and cross over Hwy 56. There is a section of the 56 bike path that is flooded now, and will get worse with expected rains. There will be a detour between for this section of the bike path that is flooded.
Bag Drop: There will be a bag drop at the Hemet Control. This is a one-way bag drop. Whatever you do not take with you will be discarded in Hemet.
Start Location: Best Western Santee Lodge, 10726 Woodside Avenue, Santee, CA 92071
Description: This ride is similar to the loop run in 2007, except it starts in Santee, much closer to the start of the climbing. Hopefully, people can get over Sage Road and in to Hemet before dark and before the temperatures start dropping. From the start line, riders begin climbing Old Hwy 80 to Alpine, and then on to Pine Valley to the first control. From there, riders go back the way they came, through Guatay, turn right on Hwy 79, and on to Julian, Santa Ysabel and Warner Springs. Be sure to top off your bottles in Warner Springs because it's over Sage Road to Hemet for the next control. From Hemet, it's down through Temecula, Fallbrook, and Oceanside to PCH, and down to Del Mar. Turn inland on Carmel Valley Road, south of Del Mar for your next control and before joining the Hwy 56 bike path towards Poway. You'll make your way to Scripps Poway Parkway headed east, then down Hwy 67 to the finish.
