The Corona Control is an optional sleep stop. That is, you may choose to rent a hotel room in Corona for a bit of shut-eye before pressing on. The organizers have booked a hotel room in Oceanside, but they cannot allow any rider to sleep in that room; that would be considered support and organizers must offer the same level of neutral support to all riders. Riders may use the bag drop in Corona and decide to sleep in Corona, or decide to go without sleep until the finish – that’s the rider’s option. In any case, hotel accommodations before, during, and after the event are the rider’s responsibility.
Getting through Camp Pendleton may be tricky, depending on the time of day you try to enter the base. If you arrive at the Las Pulgas entrance before the base allows riders onto the base, there may be two options available to you. There may be a free 24 hour shuttle that you can call, or the southbound should of I-5 might now be open to cyclists. I’ve never used the shuttle and can’t say how long you’d have to wait for it to show up, and don’t know where it’ll drop you off. If you arrive at the Las Pulgas entrance to the base during the time they’re accepting cyclists, you’ll need to show a government-issued photo ID to enter the base.
If you are not staying at the start hotel, there is free, 24×7 parking at the Old Town Trolley Station. It’s about a mile away. Here are a few Google Map suggestions for how to get from the parking lot to the hotel.
